YouTube Gains on Facebook in the U.K.

By:

YouTube has been the fastest growing social service in the U.K. for five consecutive months, according to data from Hitwise, while traffic to Facebook appears to be subsiding.

The online measurement company said visits to Google-owned YouTube grew by 5.45 percentage points in July of this year, compared with the same month in 2010. Visits to Facebook, meanwhile, dipped by 4.46 percentage points during the same period.

Overall, Facebook continues to dominate the social networking space in terms of visits, though, accounting for a 50.14 percent share in July, followed by YouTube with a 22.54 percent share. Twitter accounted for a relatively small 3.49 percent of visits in Hitwise’s social networking category, meanwhile.

CIA: “Facebook Is Truly A Dream Come True”

The onion news network published a report talking about CIA invention of Facebook program as it dramatically cuts the agency’s cost and calls Facebook “Reason we invented the internet”.

This is part of the Deputy CIA Director, Christopher Sarinsky speech about Facebook:

“After years of secretly monitoring the public, we were astounded so many people would willingly publicize where they live, their religious and political views, an alphabetized list of all their friends, personal emails addresses, phone numbers, hundreds of photos of themselves, and even status updates about what they were doing moment to moment. It is truly a dream come true for the CIA.”

It’s true about how people socialize and share their daily personal data. CIA uses this advantage plus the applications on Facebook and the features it provides such as “suggested friends” that allows the agency to goes deeper into your network and that they considered it as “It is truly a dream come true for the CIA”.

As you should know that “Mark Zuckerberg” codenamed by the CIA as ”The Overlord” as an agent!!

True as CIA invention of  their program “Facebook” and “Mark Zuckerberg” saved the government millions of dollars as the program dramatically cuts agency’s cost dropping other programs like Twitter.

New SEO Virus Symptoms May Be Difficult To Treat

SEO Virus

New SEO Virus

Website owners, particularly those who are new to the world of website ownership may be susceptible to a debilitating and contagious disease. Known by its common name, SEOitis, this virus once encountered, can result in enhanced immunity, but those exhibiting extreme neediness and gullibility may be subject to repeat occurences. If diagnosed in the early stages, the virus can be effectively treated but may result in permanent financial and emotional damage if allowed to advance.

Risk factors for this rapidly spreading infection include a belief in “get rich quick” web schemes and a trusting nature coupled with lack of internet savvy. Sufferers may also exhibit Google paranoia manifesting itself in a belief that the popular search engine can actually control the business success of individuals.

Pathogens known as SEOguri are the cause of SEOitis as they rapidly multiply in unchecked online trash heaps like Twitter and websites promising wealth enhancement on the web. While these germs may only be categorized as a nuisance to more experienced website owners, newbies can become increasingly affected as they wait for the fees they’ve paid for their online presence to multiply into mega riches.

Symptomatic behaviors include incoherent forum postings, unchecked purchases of multiple domain names and confusing content which may change on a daily or even hourly basis. As the disease progresses victims may suffer sleep loss resulting in deep neuroses, such as obssession over link creation and meta tags. Posting of repetitive content and listening to and believing in webinars, in addition to accelerated consumption of eBooks usually signals that SEOitis has set in. Financial failure and decline of online reputation is the final phase of the disease process.

Psychological counseling and website realignment may be required to bring the unfortunate victims of SEOitis back to reality. Panic attacks and withdrawl symptoms may be alleviated by website reconstruction and relinquishment of infected website marketing procedures.

Overstock Joins Paid Link Building Scandal

link-building-scandal

By: jack0

Recently, several high-profile companies have found themselves in violation of Google Search TOS by either buying or selling paid links. Forbes, in particular, was the first company to face warnings from Google over links delivered by Conductor, an SEO firm. Today, Overstock.com joins the list of Forbes and JCPenney’s of sites getting punished by Google for SEO violations.

Today’s news highlighted the continuing ripple-effect coming through several big-name sites and retailers from a link building practice seen by Google as a violation of their TOS. The Forbes PR drop and JCPenney’s punishment both were well documented and saw drops to their site’s PageRank for their participation in buying or placing these links on their site.

Today’s news, broken from the Wall Street Journal, highlights Overstock.com and their link-building tactics. It seems that Overstock was promoting company discounts through college websites and breaking through to .edu domains.

Education domains, or .edu, are seen by Google as the cream of SEO links back to to sites. By doing this practice, Overstock was able to get hundreds of .org and .edu to link back to their top-level pages. A quick search for the text of the add yielded 383 results linking back to Overstock pages. Removing a few keywords reveals 1000′s of results using the phrase “overstock.com has extended”.

The idea here is that Overstock and other companies are taking advantage of the Google algorithm in ways that were not anticipated. Google’s reaction is understandable, but rest assured they are probably already coming up with a detection technique for this and the next level of link building that they would consider in violation.

Another Social Media Fail for Sony

social media fail

by: Mohammad Jubran

Social media can be a company’s best friend or worst enemy. One moment the public is tweeting up a storm and in the time it takes to snap one’s fingers, a stalker infiltrates a CEO’s Facebook page. Sony’s use of social media can be described as inconsistent at best, resulting in a massive fail.

Those who keep tabs on a gaming or technology blog have caught wind of the Sony versus George Hultz, or Geohot, lawsuit. Sony is in hot legal pursuit of shooting down Geohot’s PS3 public release of Jailbreak. Although the actual idea of suing Geohot for creating and releasing Jailbreak seems ludicrous, Sony’s presence in social media venues makes the company appear irrational at best.

Perhaps Kevin Butler, or Jerry Lambert, is responsible for one of Sony’s biggest mistakes. This marketing character retweeted the code necessary for Jailbreaking a PS3. In response, Butler includes the original reply that contains the Jailbreak code. Even though this blunder was laughed off by most, it only goes to show just how scatterbrained Sony is in their social media endeavors.

To further exacerbate this PR nightmare, Sony requested that YouTube provide Sony with all personal information pertaining to not only Geohot but also any person who watched or made a comment regarding the PS3 Jailbreaking video. Included in the information requested, Sony wanted to know how many people clicked the link to the video as well as their usernames. The IP addresses and usernames of those who posted a comment were also sought.

In regards to social media strategies, consistency is key. And Sony has been nothing but inconsistent. Compounding this fact with their lawsuit over an issue Apple does not even find worthy enough to legally pursue, Sony comes off as looking downright foolish.

Update Your SEO Vocabulary

SEO Tips

by Terri Wells

The SEO field changes constantly in response to the search engines. These days, though, visitors find your site via Facebook, Twitter, and other resources in addition to Google. That means your approach to SEO needs to expand – and so does your vocabulary.
SEO now embraces a range of fields. A well-rounded SEO understands some of the technical aspects of websites, the wider field of Internet marketing, conversion metrics, how to test ads, and much more. If you want to keep up with the field and understand where it is going, you need to get acquainted with the concepts I’ll be explaining in this article. Give yourself a pat on the back if you’ve already heard of these, but don’t be surprised if you see a few you’ve never encountered before.

Let me give credit where it’s due. Tad Chef, writing for SEOptimise, covered these terms and more. If you want to see them explained in greater detail, he links out to an article for every single one of them.

We’ll start with a number: 503. You know about 404 not found codes, 301 redirects, and probably even 200 (which means the URL is accessible). What is a 503 code? It tells search engine crawlers, and anyone else who visits your site, that it is temporarily down for maintenance. Google notes in a Webmaster Central blog post that using a 503 HTTP result code is a way “to deal with planned website downtime…that will generally not negatively affect your site’s visibility in the search results.” You can even specify the length of time your site will be down in an optional Retry-After header, to let the Googlebot know when it can come back for something to crawl.

The next term I’d like to discuss is “A/B testing.” Also known as split testing, this is not a new technique. You’ve probably known about it for years. Google even offers ways for you to do A/B testing of your ads with them. In its simplest form, split testing involves comparing two versions of a page to find out which one gets more visitors to do what you want them to do: make a purchase, sign up for a newsletter, request more information, and so forth. Doing it right is both an art and a science, as small changes can sometimes lead to big differences in a page’s conversion rate.

Facebook’s New Capabilities For Advertisers

Facebook Page

by: Tyler Willis  //  involver

The last 30 days have included two substantial updates to Facebook’s capabilities for advertisers, the release of a new ad unit called Sponsored Stories and the addition of specified landing tabs.

Hundreds of Millions of people take actions, such as liking a page or checking in at a place, with brands on Facebook. Sponsored Stories is a new ad unit from Facebook that lets advertisers turn those actions into ads that are targeted at that person’s friends.
The launch of this ad unit has been very controversial, but is very important for Facebook Advertisers — we wrote a 1700+ word review on the blog that has everything you could care to know.

Secondly, as Inside Facebook recently reported, advertisers on Facebook now have the ability to set custom landing tabs for their Facebook ad campaigns. This means that companies investing in creating effective application experiences quickly and at scale are going to empower a whole new wave of targeted advertising and conversion.

Google’s ibook

Google's ibook

Google’s iBook Begins Rocking The Boat

It seems that nearly every technologically-inclined company is getting into the eReader market. From Apple to Barnes & Nobles, this past holiday season allowed the electronic reader market to dig its heels into the dirt for some staying power. Google is no exception to this rule either. Google has moved from a passive spectator to a full blown contender with Google Books, Google eBookstore, and finally to their own eReader dubbed the ‘Editions’.

Google started testing the waters with their Google Books, an immense project that is still being worked on today. This was an attempt to digitize as many books as possible for use on the internet. This massive undertaking may have been the start of the digitalized book game, but Amazon and Apple took it a step farther with their portable eReaders.

Google’s initial segway into this market is their comprehensive eBookstore. Instead of directly producing their own portable reader, they sought to take advantage of their huge literary resources. Usable for iPads, iPhones, Android phones, Kindles, and even the Nook, Google began offering over 3 million digital books for sale. With the ability to read practically anywhere and seamless compatibility for all portable readers, the eBookstore’s sales took off.

This was not enough for Google which has recently announced its own reader, currently known as the ‘Editions’. Google’s ibook was only just showcased in December 2010, but is already started to cause quite a commotion. Google claims that their ereader platform will be the most accessible and affordable of any companies. Their ebooks can be saved to computers, smartphones, and even the Edition with unlimited online storage space. These sweeping changes are sure to keep the creators of the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iPad scrambling to keep up with this continually evolving market.

Google still dominates advertising but Facebook is on the rise

Google still dominates advertising but Facebook is on the rise

by Ciara Byrne

Google has been criticized lately for a decline in the quality of its search results, but that hasn’t stopped it from continuing to dominate the market in search advertising with 83 percent market share, according to a new research report from IHS Screen Digest. Its only real rival is likely to come from social media.

The report estimates Google’s market share of search advertising at 83 percent in 2010, up from 81 percent in 2009. According to the report, Google’s full-year search advertising revenue in 2010 amounted to $25.4 billion, an increase of 20.2 percent from $21.1 billion in 2009. Google’s official earnings results for the fourth quarter of 2010 will be announced tomorrow.

Google’s revenue growth was even stronger in display and mobile advertising. Display revenue increased by an estimated 61 percent during 2010, boosted by the success of Google’s subsidiaries YouTube and DoubleClick. On the mobile ad side, Google benefited from the increasing popularity of the Android operating system and the AdMob acquisition.

In 2010, Google faced the first major challenge to its search business in many years with the launch of Microsoft’s Bing. However, Google has so far lost little or no ground. Bing grew mostly at the expense of its partner Yahoo.

The report predicts that the only real threat to Google is social media, rather than competing search engines. Facebook’s global advertising revenues were estimated at $1.2 billion for the first nine months of 2010. By providing a similar scale, low cost and more focused targeting to advertisers, social advertising could become a viable alternative to both search engine and display advertising. Bing already has a partnership with Facebook where Bing highlights search results endorsed by your Facebook friends and multiple startups are also working on social search.

While Google remains the undisputed leader in most major markets, there are some notable exceptions including South Korea, Russia and, most importantly, China. In these markets, the dominant search engines belong to local operators, NHN, Yandex and Baidu respectively. After its dispute with the Chinese government in the first half of the year, Google lost significant market share to Baidu in 2010, but it finally decided to remain in a search market that is already worth $1.6 billion and growing at an impressive 60 percent in 2010.

IHS Screen Digest expects Google’s total revenues to have reached $28.9 billion in 2010, a rise of 22.5 percent from 2009.
